"There is what's called a yellow strain of
Holyland which is the gold/re bicolor mentioned above but the original Holyland
variety has been listed in the SSE Yearbooks since about 1987.
"There are three possible backgrounds as
listed by different folks in the SSE YEarbooks.
"One says a Rev Giles brought it back from
Israel.
"A second says it was brought back from a
restaurant wrapped in a napkin, from Palestine.
"And it's suggested by some that it
originated in Palestine, Ohio.
"I went back to my 1986 SSE Yearbook only
to find that it probably was first listed in 1984 by Gary Staley, FL, but before
1986 varieties were listed by state and within state alphabetically by SSE
member and it's a bummer X 10 to do any searches, and besides, I don't have any
of those old Yearbooks near me except for the 1980 and it's so small that I
could easily check and Gary Staley wasn't offering anything in the 1980
Yearbook.
"So take your pick of backgrounds as to the
original variety Holyland which is indet, RL and has 'large' red globe shaped
fruits as described by those who grew it in the early 90's."
So now I'm really curious, since there was no mention of the wispy leaf gene - and I'm interested in those long elegant buds - like the eyelashes of a green giraffe. I'd lay my money on an elongated French or Italian type.
