Straw Bale Beds: Part Ruth Stout, Part Mittleider

This year John and I wanted to put raised beds closer to the water supply and to the house, but we couldn't quite decide where to construct permanent raised beds. So we ended up experimenting with straw bales to form garden plots that are half container garden and half raised bed, with the advantage of being easily moved from year to year and completely compostable.

This is one of the beds we put together on Sunday, June 10. It's just a box formed by butting eight straw bales together on the ground. The interior space is approximately 3' by  5 3/4' by 14" deep.

This is the first bed we completed, which contains two volunteer tomato plants, three peppers - Hungarian Wax and 2 Fish, five cos lettuces, four radicchio, and about 30 Dillman's Bush Greasy bean plants. John has gussied up the whole thing with pots of coleus, herbs, and other flowers. Beyond this bed is a longer bed that we put together on June 10 in addition to the new 3' by 5 3/4' bed shown in the picture above.

A closeup of the cos lettuce and radicchio side of the bed.
John did a beautiful job using part lasagna garden methods and part intuition and gardening know-how. And I got to plant it - it was so easy and pretty when we were finished. It's been super-productive already and has required almost no additional watering.
